The Rise and Influence of Nationalism in Japan around WWII Essay

The Rise and Influence of Nationalism in Japan around WWII - Essay Example WWII fortified such belief systems as Bushido (the method of the warrior) and strict philosophy of Shinto, thoughts of the New Structure’ and Accord State†. These various types of patriotism were commonly worthy. The â€Å"New Structure† was a vital segment of patriotism, and new organizations must be imported as a methods for connecting all Japanese to one national administration for political and monetary centralization. The very demonstration of bringing in these establishments, the qualities whereupon they depended on an immediate help to the social and social customs shaped the substance of the Japanese country. Rather than different states lectured independence, Japanese patriotism depended on the possibility of aggregate personality and goals which assisted with joining the country against ‘outside’ world. The ruler didn't assume a prevailing job in political and public activity. Pundits guess that authority over the nations and its political p rocedures were set up by the military, framed by the Emperor and Government. During the WWII, Japanese rehearsed kamikaze as one of the fundamental national conventions. They had extraordinary kamikaze units in the Japanese Fleet who made an incredible harm to foes. Since Japanese accept that the world wherein they lived and the political world were two separate elements, it was hard to get general society to relate to the state and political foundations. The social framework had a higher significance in Japan than the political framework, and political establishments had next to no social importance to Japanese. As happened in the Meiji time frame, Japan's destruction prompted a discount dismissal of prewar organizations and a wholehearted selection of a large portion of the occupation changes as a methods for freeing Japan of its mediocre status.

Application Essay Topic - Keep Your Essay Professional

Application Essay Topic - Keep Your Essay ProfessionalWhen you are writing an application essay, you may want to consider this tip. Find a topic that you really know something about. If you're applying for an entry-level position at a college or university, chances are that you know nothing about it. You will be able to talk about what you would bring to the school and how much you know about the subject, but you won't be able to get into any trouble if you have no real knowledge of the subject area.Perhaps you are a teacher or a scientific or academic type person. This is a great way to get into trouble if you don't know what you're talking about. It is still your essay, but you may not want to discuss that particular subject, especially when you don't know what it's all about. That is why, if you want to be seen as credible, you should find a topic that you know a lot about. Find one that interests you. Research it in your local library and speak with other professionals about it. T hen write your essay about it. It will give you the opportunity to learn more about the subject, and it will help you gain credibility as an expert on the topic.Another thing to remember is that you need to find a topic that has some sort of relationship to your education. For example, if you are writing an application essay to apply for a full-time position, then it should be related to the position that you are applying for. For example, if you are writing an application essay to write for the science department, it would make sense to write about things like biology, physics, and chemistry. Also, make sure that your essay does not take up too much of your free time. Sometimes, it will seem like it is taking up all of your time and is dragging you away from everything else that you need to do in order to get the job that you want. The best option is to keep your focus on what is most important in the essay. Finally, don't make the mistake of jumping into the question and answer of t he essay too soon after you got the letter. You will probably be asked to respond to an applicant before you have the chance to prepare. That is okay - just get your response together later on.That said, don't worry about the application essay being perfect. You shouldn't want it to be perfect either. However, you should strive to be as honest as possible. Always remember that people are reading your application essay, and they are not always looking for great essays.Be as clear and concise as possible in your answer. Follow the rules of grammar and use proper punctuation and word choice. This will go a long way in helping you to gain respect from the employer.

Vietnam War Brigadier General Robin Olds

Born July 14, 1922, in Honolulu, HI, Robin Olds was the son of then-Captain Robert Olds and his wife Eloise. The oldest of four, Olds spent the majority of his childhood at Langley Field in Virginia where his father was stationed as an aide to Brigadier General Billy Mitchell. While there he also associated with key officers in the US Army Air Service such as Major Carl Spaatz. In 1925, Olds accompanied his father to Mitchells famed court-martial. Dressed in a child-size air service uniform, he watched his father testify on Mitchells behalf. Five years later, Olds flew for the first time when his father took him aloft. Deciding on a military career at an early age, Olds attended Hampton High School where he became a standout in football. Declining a series of football scholarships, he elected to take a year of study at Millard Preparatory School in 1939 prior to applying to West Point. Learning of the outbreak of World War II while at Millard, he attempted to leave school and enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force. This was blocked by his father who forced him to stay at Millard. Completing the course of study, Olds was accepted to West Point and entered the service in July 1940. A football star at West Point, he was named an All-American in 1942 and later was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame. Learning to Fly Selecting service in the US Army Air Forces, Olds completed his primary flight training in the summer of 1942 at the Spartan School of Aviation in Tulsa, OK. Returning north, he passed through advanced training at Stewart Field in New York. Receiving his wings from General Henry Hap Arnold, Olds graduated from West Point on June 1, 1943, after completing the academys accelerated wartime curriculum. Commissioned as a second lieutenant, he received an assignment to report to the West Coast for training on P-38 Lightnings. This done, Olds was posted to the 479th Fighter Groups 434th Fighter Squadron with orders for Britain. Fighting Over Europe Arriving in Britain in May 1944, Olds squadron quickly entered combat as part of the Allied air offensive prior to the invasion of Normandy. Dubbing his aircraft Scat II, Olds worked closely with his crew chief to learn about aircraft maintenance. Promoted to captain on July 24, he scored his first two kills the following month when he downed a pair of Focke Wulf Fw 190s during a bombing raid over Montmirail, France. On August 25, during an escort mission to Wismar, Germany, Olds shot down three Messerschmitt Bf 109s to become the squadrons first ace. In mid-September, the 434th began converting to the P-51 Mustang. This required some adjustment on Olds part as the single-engine Mustang handled differently than the twin-engine Lightning. After downing a Bf 109 over Berlin, Olds completed his initial combat tour in November and was given two months leave in the United States. Returning to Europe in January 1945, he was promoted to major the following month. On March 25, he received command of the 434th. Slowly increasing his score through the spring, Olds scored his final kill of the conflict on April 7 when he destroyed a Bf 109 during a B-24 Liberator a raid over LÃ ¼neburg. With the end of the war in Europe in May, Olds tally stood at 12 kills as well as 11.5 destroyed on the ground. Returning to the US, Olds was assigned to West Point to serve as an assistant football coach to Earl Red Blaik. Postwar Years Olds time at West Point proved brief as many older officers resented his rapid rise in rank during the war. In February 1946, Olds obtained a transfer to the 412th Fighter Group and trained on the P-80 Shooting Star. Through the remainder of the year, he flew as part of a jet demonstration team with Lieutenant Colonel John C. Pappy Herbst. Seen as a rising star, Olds was selected for a US Air Force-Royal Air Force exchange program in 1948. Traveling to Britain, he commanded No. 1 Squadron at RAF Tangmere and flew the Gloster Meteor. With the end of this assignment in late 1949, Olds became the operations officer for the F-86 Sabre-equipped 94th Fighter Squadron at March Field in California. Olds next was given command of the Air Defense Commands 71st Fighter Squadron based at the Greater Pittsburgh Airport. He remained in this role for much of the Korean War despite repeated requests for combat duty. Increasingly unhappy with the USAF, despite promotions to lieutenant colonel (1951) and colonel (1953), he debated retiring but was talked out of it by his friend Major General Frederic H. Smith, Jr. Shifting to Smiths Eastern Air Defense Command, Olds languished in several staff assignments until receiving an assignment to the 86th Fighter-Interceptor Wing at Landstuhl Air Base, Germany in 1955. Remaining abroad for three years, he later oversaw the Weapons Proficiency Center at Wheelus Air Base, Libya. Made Deputy Chief, Air Defense Division at the Pentagon in 1958, Olds produced as series of prophetic papers calling for improved air-to-air combat training and the increased production of conventional munitions. After assisting in generating the funding for the classified SR-71 Blackbird program, Olds attended the National War College in 1962-1963. Following graduation, he commanded the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Bentwaters. During this time, he brought over former Tuskegee Airman Colonel Daniel Chappie James, Jr. to Britain to serve on his staff. Olds left the 81st in 1965 after forming an aerial demonstration team without command authorization. Vietnam War After brief service in South Carolina, Olds was given command of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base. As his new unit flew the F-4 Phantom II, Olds completed an accelerated training course on the aircraft before departing to take part in the Vietnam War. Appointed to instill aggressiveness into the 8th TFW, Olds immediately placed himself on the flight schedule as a rookie pilot upon arriving in Thailand. He encouraged his men to train him well so that he could be an effective leader for them. Later that year, James joined Olds with the 8th TFW and two became known among the men as Blackman and Robin. Increasing concerned about F-105 Thunderchief losses to North Vietnamese MiGs during bombing missions, Olds designed Operation Bolo in late 1966. This called for 8th TFW F-4s to mimic F-105 operations in an effort to draw enemy aircraft into combat. Implemented in January 1967, the operation saw American aircraft down seven MiG-21s, with Olds shooting down one. The MiG losses were the highest suffered in one day by the North Vietnamese during the war. A stunning success, Operation Bolo effectively eliminated the MiG threat for most of the spring of 1967. After bagging another MiG-21 on May 4, Olds shot down two MiG-17s on the 20th to raise his total to 16. Over the next few months, Olds continued to personally lead his men into combat. In an effort to raise morale in the 8th TFW, he began growing a famed handlebar mustache. Copied by his men, they referred to them as bulletproof mustaches. During this time, he avoided shooting down a fifth MiG as he had been alerted that should he become an ace over Vietnam, he would be relieved of command and brought home to conduct publicity events for the Air Force. On August 11, Olds conducted a strike on the Paul Doumer Bridge in Hanoi. For his performance, he was awarded the Air Force Cross. Later Career Leaving the 8th TFW in September 1967, Olds was made Commandant of Cadets at the US Air Force Academy. Promoted to brigadier general on June 1, 1968, he worked to restore pride in the school after a large cheating scandal had blackened its reputation. In February 1971, Olds became director of aerospace safety in the Office of the Inspector General. That fall, he was sent back to Southeast Asia to report on the combat readiness of USAF units in the region. While there, he toured bases and flew several unauthorized combat missions. Returning to the US, Olds wrote a scathing report in which he offered deep concerns in regard to a lack of air-to-air combat training. The following year, his fears were proven true when the USAF incurred a 1:1 kill-loss ratio during Operation Linebacker. In an effort to aid the situation, Olds offered to take a reduction in rank to colonel so that he could return to Vietnam. When this offer was refused, he elected to leave the service on June 1, 1973. Retiring to Steamboat Springs, CO, he was active in public affairs. Enshrined in the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2001, Olds later died on June 14, 2007. Olds ashes were interred at the US Air Force Academy. Being A Role As A Counselor - 868 Words

When I took a counseling class at Sanno University in Tokyo, Japan in 2012, I remember that I enjoyed role-playing practice, especially being a role as a counselor. I was able to get the message of other students who played a role of a client even though they had hard time finding words to make themselves clear. Then, I thought it might be my specialty to listen to others and understand their situations by observing their voice tone, facial expressions as well as body movements. Furthermore, while I heard many classmates said that they got unexpected shoulder pain and fatigue after listening to people’s story as a counselor at the end of the day, I was exited finding out my listening skill without feeling any exhaustion. Before I took this class, I had already had some years of work experiences that allowed me to develop my listening skills as well as communication skills throughout my duty, which probably helped me perform well and get grade A. In relation to my academic goal in The Chicago School of Psychology, I would like to list two of my work experiences to explain my potential ability to study the master program of mental health counseling. Firstly, I have worked as an operator at a busy travel agency in Tokyo for two years in 2003 through 2005. The level of brand awareness is high accounting people and hence it would be easy for them to accept it. Depending on the creativity and uniqueness of product promotions, it is even possible to generate curiosity and excitement in the minds of new customers for the brand. The increasing coffee consuming population is adding cherry on the cake. Potential markets The potential markets chosen for the brand are Australia and China. The reason behind considering these two countries is their increasing population, changing demographics, ease of doing business index, disposable income of their people and growing economic environment. Both Australia and China are developed economies and have a significant contribution to the worlds growth. The macro environment of the two countries can be better understood by conducting a PESTLE analysis which is as below (Newton, 2014): Australia Politically Australia is a democratic liberal democracy. The intervention of government is partial and most of the businesses are in private hands. The open government is a clear advantage for any new business. The tax system is largely favorable and the costs involved in starting a new business are competitive. Economic Economically Australia is a great opportunity for any entrepreneurs. The ease of doing business in the country is high and at present it ranks 14 in the world. Australias non-farm payrolls employment number are rising and hence the country is welcoming new businesses with open arms. The inflation is contained and the overall business market is open with bare minimum restrictions. Social Socio-cultural factors affecting any organization refer to the set of beliefs, customs, behaviors and practices that people of a region predominantly follow. The country is ranked 42nd in the worlds coffee consumption which is more than most countries. The level of education in the country is highest yet. The influence of the British is very large on the population and hence the coffee culture is on a rise. Technological As of 2011, almost 79% of the population in the country is internet savvy. Over 17million people are smartphone users. These two factors alone are evidence enough of the technological growth and development of the country. Technological advancement of any country acts in the favor of a new business establishment as it helps the business in enhancing the reach to the customer. Legal Australias business laws are simple and make the entire process of starting a new business rather convenient. The company must be registered as a foreign company followed by obtaining permits to run operations in Australia are the two basic necessary steps that must be adopted by the company before venturing into this country. The business taxes that need to paid are as below: Corporate tax Goods and Services Tax Capital gains tax Other business taxes. Environmental Managers of any organization must take into account the environmental and ecological factors impacting the country of operations. Lavazza has a project Tierra running in order to ensure sustainable development of the planet. After due consideration of the ecological environment of Australia, similar project can be included. Australian governments are particular about their carbon footprints. It is essential that the wastes from businesses in Australia is disposed in an efficient manner. Political China is a constitutional monarchy. Both formal and informal organizations must abide by government rules and regulations. The political stability of the country is currently a question mark. The increasing privatization is a boon for new businesses. However, the intervention of government in the starting up of a new business is one of the highest in the world. Economic China is a developed economy with a rising inflation. The employment numbers are getting better and the steps taken by the government to control the population are expected to improve them further. China is ranked 78th in terms of the ease of doing business in the world according to World Bank reports. The increasing inflation is reducing the disposable income of people making the country a non-favorable destination for marketers. Social Socially, China has improved leaps and bounds over the last few years. The government has put efforts in curbing the unfathomably and aimlessly growing population of the country. The coffee consumption is evident and the large population of the country reduces the impact of existing competition. The level of education is growing and so is consumer awareness. Technological China is a birthplace for second hand technology. Any technology existing in any part of the world would have a me too product in China at a cheaper price. Even so, only close to 40% of the people are using the internet. Due to the uneven income distribution, some of the cities have become a massive hub for business and growth while some are still coming to terms with this growth. Legal There are various laws in place that govern new businesses in the country. The control of the government on the same is relatively high and makes it difficult for budding entrepreneurs to be creative. There is no such thing as an independent contractor in China. Therefore the company has to be registered as a foreign entity and be governed by those rules. Environmental There are various steps taken by the Chinese government for the betterment of the environment in the country. China has been conducting immense research in the field of solar energy and the availability of that technology is a boon for any new business in the country. The central government ideally issues strict compliances and the monitoring and enforcement of the same is done by the local governments. China has also been working hard on its carbon footprints and hence ensures that the organizations effectively use their resources. Selected market Given the above analysis, the appropriate market for entry is Australia. There are various reasons for selecting Australia. These reasons are as below: Higher ease of doing business Rank 14th in the whole world (World Bank, 2018). Controlled inflation hence higher disposable income of people. Population is more technologically aware and averse. Coffee drinking is an important part of their culture. British influence. Less government intervention. Increased privatization. Lesser competition as compared to China. General strategy Global standardization The biggest advantage of Lavazza stays with the strong brand name and history of the Lavazza family. For certain brands, it is important that they remain authentic to their roots irrespective of their company of operations. Therefore the strategy recommended to Lavazza coffee would be that of global standardization. This means that the company and its products remain the same across the world (Kotabe Helsen, 2014). It is true that the consumer needs and demands of every country is highly varied and it is largely difficult to presume that such a wide variety of peoples needs would be catered to by a single product. However, there are various advantages to adopting this strategy. The brand name of the organization is preserved. The authentic ideas and products remain the same. The longer term vision behind a global standardization strategy is to ensure customers across the world of the same taste, quality, richness and flavor of the coffee across the world. Such brands become home brands and they act as a safety net for people travelling to foreign locations. Moreover the huge line of Lavazza products ensures that the company is single handedly able to cater to the needs of diverse customers across the globe. Lavazza classifies its coffee into 10 categories. This division is based on the flavor, texture, richness and aroma of the coffee. Given the efficiency of this division as well as the large range of products in each range make it plausible for Lavazza coffee to cater to the needs of highly diverse customers with varied tastes and preferences in coffee. Entry mode in Australia Joint Venture Australia has a booming coffee market. Currently Lavazza products are supplied in the Australian food market Valcorp fine foods. However, the market penetration is bare minimum and the company barely holds any share in the market. In order to make its presence felt, it is imperative that organizations select appropriate modes to enter into a new country. This is crucial as the mode of entry has a rather longer term impact on the shareholding of the company. The entry mode recommended to Lavazza coffee for entry into Australia would be a Joint Venture. A joint venture is ideally a combination of two established companies (one local and one international) who come together and work in consensus. The exact holding of each organization in the collaboration is mutually decided. In this scenario, Lavazza coffee must indulge in a joint venture with a well-established name brand like Woolworths Limited. The various advantages of the joint venture between Woolworths Limited and Lavazza coffee would be as below. Local knowledge The idea behind tying up with a local brand is to gauge the knowledge that the brand holds about the local culture, customs, people and lifestyles of the area and use it efficiently to improve and establish business (Yan Luo, 2016). Woolworths limited has been in existence in Australia since 1924. After almost a millennium of a business, the brand obviously holds immense knowledge about the locals and Lavazza could really take advantage of that. When two leading brands like Lavazza coffee and Woolworths come together, they yield immediate response owing to the long term trust in the two organizations. Woolworths long history in the country has garnered immense goodwill in the market. When Lavazza coffee ties up with such a reliable brand, there will be a certain amount of trust and respect associated with the venture from the beginning. Shared risks and costs When two companies come together for a joint venture, they share the risks and costs of the ventures. Hence the burden does not entirely fall on one organization (Shah, 2015). This is a major advantage of joint ventures. Since Australia is a relatively new market for Lavazza, it is expected to come with a certain amount of risks in the business. These risks can be covered by Woolworths experience and knowledge of the area. Improved relationships and growing network The biggest advantage of a joint venture is the long term relationships and bond that forms between the two organizations. When two leading brands come together and work collaboratively, it signifies a road map for future growth and success of both the brands. Owing to Woolworths history in the country, they have built and established a grand network of suppliers, vendors, media personnel, distributors and other stakeholders of the business. Lavazza coffee can gain the direct advantage of this network and utilize it to their advantage, gain and growth. Growth Lavazza coffee and its growth in the international market is the agenda in the report. However, a joint venture with Woolworths limited will also lead to the growth of the local brand. This would be their introduction in an entirely different business segment. It would help them enhance their product lines and attract an even wider customer base for the business. Promotional strategies In order to be able to succeed in any new business, it is important that the product or service is promoted effectively. The promotional strategies of any business help the organization in reaching out a wide customer segment and market their products to them. International expansion also requires immense promotion from the brand. For the existing product, promotion strategies can be relatively easier but for an international expansion, the promotional strategies of the business have the responsibility of creating excitement about a new product in a new market. This can often be tricky. Strategies recommended to Lavazza coffee for effective promotion in Australian grounds is as below. Television advertising The first and foremost strategy that can be adopted by any business to venture into a new country is to reach out to people through television. The viewership of television is massive in almost every part of the globe. This is why television advertisments lead to an enhanced awareness about the brand and its upcoming presence in their local countries. Lavazza coffee must ensure that they associate with leading channels and broadcast creative advertisements at peak watching hours. Interesting taglines could also be used by the brand like Soon in Australia or Now in Australia to make people aware about the introduction. Joint venture advertising In this case of a joint venture mode of entry, Woolworths limited must also work towards promoting Lavazza coffee to its existing customers and using their existing strategies. This would help in building trust and curiosity in the minds of the consumers. Social media marketing Social media marketing is the art of promoting any brand, organization or product through social media platforms. The growing usage of social media has now made these platforms a promotion for leading brands. Lavazza coffee already has dedicated Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest and Twitter accounts with a large number of followers. Social media marketing is a largely effective tool to reach out a large customer segment with the help of a single platform. Social media has also become a medium to enable a two way communication with customers (Solomon Tuten, 2017). In order to ensure this, Lavazza must enhance their social listening and be consistently aware of what is being spoken about the brand on various social media platforms. Facebook posts are often followed by various comments and twitter hashtags are largely responsible for creating a buzz in the market. These strategies of social media marketing must be adopted by Lavazza coffee to ensure a higher brand reach and improved customer base. Digital marketing Digital marketing enables users to look for a brand on search engines in an effective manner. At the same time, these users are targeted by the company on numerous digital platforms. This makes it easy for the brands to target customers based on their preferences, internet search history, location, cultures, behavior and cookies stored. Digital marketing breeds on search engine optimization and search engine marketing (Chaffey Ellis-Chadwick, 2016). Both these processes make it easy for consumers to reach out to their customers and consistently target them through different sources and destinations. Challenges of starting a new business in Australia No country in the world is perfect in every aspect. Even while starting a business in Australia, it is important to list down various challenges that Lavazza may face within the Australian market. This will help the brand stay prepared and be ready with a contingency plan as and when required. The various challenges of starting a new business in Australia are as below: It is important to submit the ASIC form 201. This is an application for the registration of a company. Availing construction permits is very difficult especially for a foreign company, Lavazza would be opening up outlets and hence this can pose a severe threat Attaining office utilities in Australia is a longer process than any other country. Utility involves basic utilities like electric and water supply. The company must complete a CT metering form to arrange for an internal wiring in the office. This entire procedure takes about 75 days just to get basic utilities in place. Taxation is taken very strictly. The corporate tax currently stands at flat 30%. It is imperative for Lavazza to familiarize itself with the taxation policies of the country. Australian culture is difficult to understand and track owing to a significant impact of nearby countries. Also the country has no majority religion of its own. This diversity in the population makes it difficult to understand the culture of the country. It is highly important to understand the GST (Goods and services tax) levied in Australia. There is already an increasing competition especially from Di Bella coffee which has become a global brand on its own. Recommendations Lavazza coffee is a leading brand in Italy and across the globe. After detailed analysis, a new prospective market Lavazza coffee has been finalized as Australia. This report has laid emphasis on international expansion strategies that can be adopted by Lavazza in order to expand to the Australian market. Expanding to any new markets requires immense expertise and knowledge. There are various circumstantial issues that must be considered. Few recommendations for Lavazza are as below: Know about the market Before venturing into this international market, it is highly recommended to know about the market well in advance. The firm must decide upon their location and distributors as well as customer preferences and ideologies. It is also important to understand the customer needs and work towards catering those specific needs of the consumers. Pricing strategy It is also important that while entering into a new market, the product must be priced effectively to ensure that people buy it. Lavazza follows a premium pricing strategy across the globe. Premium pricing refers to pricing the product slightly higher than the markets average (Hinterhuber Liozu, 2018). This way the brand, sets an effective positioning for itself and hence targets a niche market who can afford quality products at a higher price. For premium priced products, the target market of the organization shifts on the basis of income groups. Lavazza coffee will be opening up various cafes and hence it becomes crucial to effectively finalize the place where they set their caf. Lavazza coffee must select commercial places which are easy to locate. It will also be beneficial to have an outlet at leading airports of the country. Appropriate selection of place makes is plausible for customers to reach the outlet and hence leads to increased brand visibility and awareness. Promote well The last part of the product market involves promoting the product in such a manner that it is easy to reach out to consumers. Lavazza coffee must allocate unique strategies to ensure that that the consumers are aware about the product. The promotions of the company should be able to create a sense of curiosity and excitement in the minds of consumers. Digital marketing, social media marketing, billboard advertisement, television newspaper ads as well as email marketing can be used by Lavazza to reach out to its consumers. Conclusion Lavazza coffee is a leading coffee chain established in Italy. The brand has now become a global brand with a wide presence across the globe. This report throws light on the international expansion strategies that can be adopted by the company. For consideration, China and Australian markets have been considered. Of the two countries, Australia has provided for a better business opportunity for Lavazza coffee. This is due to the controlled inflation, high disposable income, increased ease of business, rising coffee population and internet aversion of the consumers. Australia is a land of a brilliant opportunity for Lavazza. It has been recommended that Lavazza must adopt a global standardization strategy and ensure that the look, feel, taste and flavor of the brand remains the same across the globe. Moreover, the entry mode to adopt is recommended to be a joint venture with Woolworths Limited. The brand image and the wide reach of the latter is sure to benefit Lavazza coffee. Lavazza coffee has a strong brand name and in order for further growth, it is important for the brand to analyze new areas of operation. Australia seems like that perfect next jump destination to make for the coffee brand. With appropriate pricing, unique promotions and clear understanding of the market, Lavazza coffee can surely gain a large market and enhance its customer base across the world. This would lead to the brands increased awareness, improved positioning and widened reach. References Carey, J.M., 2016. Visionaries: Creating a Modern Guggenheim. New York. Guggenheim bookstore. The Plague Essays (986 words) - Absurdist Fiction, Philosophy

The Plague The Plague Camus wrestles with his questions of Existentialism in The Plague through another character as well: Father Paneloux. With Paneloux, Camus attempts to reconcile Existentialism and Christianity. Toward the beginning of the novel, Paneloux is a steadfast Christian. He proclaims in his first great sermon during the epidemic that the plague is God-sent, brought upon the evildoers of society to punish them for their sins. He later involves himself in the struggle against the plague, helping men such as Rieux and Tarrou, and putting his faith to the test. The test reaches its utmost when the characters are forced to watch the slow, tortured death of an innocent child. How could something sent to punish sin afflict a child? The child had done no wrong, yet the group cannot do more than to sit and wait helpless as the child dies before them. Shortly after this event, Paneloux begins to write another sermon. This one differs from the first. He reflects in his sermon on what he has witnessed. "And, truth to tell, nothing was more important on earth than a child suffering, the horror it inspires in us, and the reasons we must find to account for it" (Beginning of Part 4). Paneloux goes on to explain his reason. "The second sermon affirms that the plague is not sent by God; it is part of an evil which is present in the universe and which the Christian must confront" (Woelfel 109). Although Paneloux attempts to reconcile Christianity with Existentialism, he nonetheless fails. Paneloux dies. He, as well as symbolically, his attempt, receive the label which the doctor Rieux records on a card: "Doubtful case." Rieux becomes himself one of the first people in the town to recognize the plague for what it is, and he helps to lead the fight against it. "Rieux is an authentic rebel in 'fighting against creation as he found it,' in actively struggling against the injustices of the human condition" (Woelfel 98-99). Rieux is no ordinary rebel; he is also a doctor. As a doctor, Rieux's exposure to not only the dangers of the plague but also to its horrors is more than most must endure. Rieux faces this in his job before him each day. "In order to make his rounds and to isolate the people who are infected he has to repress the pity and sympathy he feels for them" (Cruickshank 110). It may seem then that Rieux goes against Camus' beliefs on indifference. Rieux's actions can indeed be seen as self-enforced indifference. For "indifference, properly cultivated, can be a stoic value" (Parker 5). Rieux cannot afford to show compassion for each of his patients. He must detach himself in order to perfrom his duties. "No resource was left him but to tighten the stranglehold on his feelings and harden his heart protectively" (Camus 172). Yet Rieux does not keep his feelings locked up within a fortress. After he talks with Tarrou, he lets himself become more open, more vulnerable. Nothing he could have done would have made it any easier to bear witness to the death of an innocent child. Rieux does not stake a claim to the same peace that Tarrou seeks. Rieux knows that the fight he fights can never end. "Rieux knows that the plague bacillus never dies and that the day would come when 'it would raise up its rats again and send them to die in a happy city' " (Erickson 84). Riuex, like the plague bacillus, lives on as the disease slows and the epidemic ends, for the time being, anyhow. If in The Plague, there is one person who most represents most people, it is Rambert. Rambert is a journalist. Rambert finds himself trapped in the city of Oran, trapped with all the other people. He believes, though, that this is truly not his concern. He does not belong. He is an outsider. The woman he loves lives beyond the city walls, and he believes this is where he should be. He spends much time talking Rieux. And as they talk, he begins to think. He considers his motivation for leaving the city: personal happiness. "'There's nothing shameful in preferring happiness.' ' Certainly, but it may be shameful to be happy by oneself' " (Camus 188). Rambert awakens to the truth which he had been facing all along . Rambert decides to drop his attempts to escape: he is part of this people, he is no longer an outsider. They must all stay together to fight the plague. Rambert gives the fight his best efforts as

How to Use SAT Scores Advice to Admissions and Employers

How to Use SAT Scores Advice to Admissions and Employers SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Standardized test scores have long had an important place in college admissions, as well as for some jobs.Schools and employers want to they accept the most talented people, so they often use SAT scores to judgeintelligence and future success. However, somecommon beliefsabout what SAT scores representare actually false. Read this guide to learn what information SAT scores can and cannot be used to determineand maximize the usefulness of standardized test scores for your school, business, or committee. Who Uses SAT Scores? First of all, who uses SAT scores? Standardized test scores areused by many different people and groups, and I'll discuss three of the most common below. College Admissions Officers Colleges and universities are, by far, the most frequent users of SAT scores. Most schools require applicants to submit standardized test scores as part of their application. SAT scores can be useful to colleges because they give them a standard way to measure intelligence and predict college success. While there are other ways of measuring a student’s academic abilities, such as their GPA and class rank, these can vary widely between schools. A student who gets an â€Å"A† in their high school’s calculus class may only have been awarded a â€Å"C† if they had done the same workat a different school due to grade inflation, class curves, and how hard the teacher grades. Using SAT scores gives colleges a clear and efficient way to evaluate high school students from around the world. As students apply to more schools, this criteria is becoming more important because most colleges receive thousands, if nottens of thousands, of applications each year.SAT scores give colleges a fast and unambiguous way to evaluate each application they receive. Employers It is less common for employers to use SAT scores, but it’s still done, particularly in the fields of consulting, software engineering, and investment banking.Similar to colleges, these companies want an easy and clear way to measure an applicant’s intelligence.SAT scorescan be especially useful for large companies thatreceive a lot of applications, as well as companies hiring recent graduates whodon’t have a lot of work experience. Scholarship Committees One of the SAT’s earliest purposes was actually as a scholarship test for Ivy League schools.Today, many scholarships require applicants to submit standardized test scores.Like colleges and employers, the SAT can give scholarship committees a simple and unambiguous way to measure student aptitude and compare students who may be otherwise similar. Many scholarships help pay for college, and thecommittees who oversee these scholarshipsoften want to award them to students who are most likely to put them to good use and do well in school. SAT scores are a way to predict which applicants have the highest likelihood of being successful. Don't use SAT scores for the reasons listed below. How Shouldn't You Use SAT Scores? First, let's go overwhat you should not be using SAT scores to determine. I've listedfour inaccurate ways to use SAT scores below and explainedwhy each onedoesn’t give wholly accurate information. As a Complete Indicator of Intelligence While the SAT is often used to determine how â€Å"smart† someone is, there are three problems with doing so. The first problem is that the SAT only tests a narrow set of skills and intelligence. The SAT can help estimate how good someone is at reading comprehension, identifying grammatical errors, and solving certain math problems, but in no way can a multiple choice test with an optional essay test all the complexities of intelligence. The SAT cannot measure a student’s creativity, research skills, interpersonal intelligence, ability to easily learn a new language,or many other indicators of intelligence.By testing only certain types of intelligence, the SAT favors students with these types of intelligence while putting students with types of intelligence that are more difficult to test at a disadvantage. The second problem with this way of understanding SAT scores is that test preparation can significantly raise your score. We at PrepScholar know that, through dedicated test prep, a student can significantly improve his or her SAT score. If one student gets a 1500 on the SAT without studying, and another raises his grade from a 1200 to a 1500 after 40 hours of studying, is one smarter than the other? Some may say the first student is smarter, but the decision to prepare for an important test like the SAT is also a measure of intelligence, so the answer is not really clear.Instead of measuring just intelligence, the SAT measures intelligence and motivation, because a student can have one or the other, or both, and do well on the test. The third problemis that outside factors unrelated to intelligence often have a strong impact on SAT performance.Multiple studies have shown that there is a significant gap between the SAT scores of rich and poor students. One recent study found that students from wealthy families score about 400 points higher on the SAT than students low-income families. This result makes some sense because students who come from wealthier backgrounds likely attend schools with more resources, have parents who can afford SAT prep materials and courses, and often receive more pressure from their parents to do well on the SAT.Therefore, using the SAT as a measure of intelligence can discriminate against students from poorer backgrounds, who are also more likely to be minorities. To Find a "Genius" Sometimesschools and employers will admit someone withperfect SAT scores and thinkthat person will be a genius, good at everything, or guaranteed to do well.A person who gets a perfect score on the SAT may, in fact, be very intelligent, but they may also have put a lot of time into preparing, gotten lucky that day, or a combination of the above. Regardless of the reason, a person who gets a perfect score on the SAT won’t necessarily do well in everything else.As mentioned above, the SAT only tests certain types of intelligence, which also means that a person widely considered to be intelligent may not get a perfect score or even do very well on the SAT at all. It also shouldn’t be assumed that people with perfect SAT scores are more intelligent than those who didn’t receive perfect scores, which leads into the next point. To Compare People With Similar Scores The SAT should not be used to compare the intelligence of people who received similar scores, or a difference around150 points or less. A person with a score of 1450 and a person with a score of 1400 likely had only a small difference between the number of questions they answered correctly. The person who received the 1450 shouldn’t be assumed to be smarter than the person who received the 1400. Their differences in score could simply be due to normal variation in SAT results. If they both took the SAT again, it’d be completely possible for the person who got the 1400 to get the higher score that time. A person's SAT scores can vary from test to test, and people can get questions right or wrong by mistake, which doesn’t necessarily reflect their intelligence. When two (or more) people have similar SAT scores, it’s not possible to determine who is more intelligent simply by looking at the slightly higher score because aperson’s score will generally fluctuate somewhat. Even small changes in the number of questions answered correctly can have a large effect on the final composite score. Don't compare applicants with very similar SAT scores. To Determine Specific Areas of Expertise The SAT also cannot, and should not, be used to judge someone’s skill level or knowledge of a specific topic. For example, a personwho got a perfect score on the SAT essay may not know how to write a research paper, and someone who didwell in themath section may not know anything about calculus. If you’re provided with subscores, they may givemore details on how well the applicant did in certain subjects, but this information should still not be used to make assumptions about specific skill setsand knowledge areas. What Should You Use SAT Scores For? So how can SAT scores be used? Three main ways are given below; in general, all involve using SAT scores to make broad inferences that can be further supported with additional information. To Estimate IQ SATs are certainly not a perfect way to measure how smart someone is, but there is a relationship between IQ and SAT score. While IQ only tests a certain type of problem-solving, (specifically the ability to solve problems based on the information you are given), it is still often used as a measure of intelligence. Meredith C. Gray and Douglas K. Detterman, two researchers at Case Western Reserve University, have conducted rigorous studies to better understand the relationship between standardized test scores and intelligence. From their research, they have found that there is a strong correlation between SAT scores and IQ. That means if someone scores well on the SAT then it is more likely, although not guaranteed, that they have a high IQ as well. Many schools and companies want to hire people with a certain level of intelligence in order to ensure they can handle the work, and while there are other types of intelligence that neither the SAT nor IQ exams test for, using SAT scores can be a good way to estimate IQ and intelligence if you have many applicants you don’t know much about. In order to be most accurate, other information, such as GPA and letters of recommendation should be used to support inferences made from SAT scores.A student with a high SAT score, excellent GPA, and a history of leadership in her extracurriculars has done well in high school and seems likely to continue that success. However, a student with a low SAT score should not necessarily be discounted, especially if they are strong in other areas, such as a good GPA and glowing letters of recommendation. That person may have had a bad test day, get nervous during standardized tests, or excel in other areas not tested by the SAT. SAT scores cannot accuratelydetermine how smart every person who takes the exam is, so when reviewing applications, all of a student’s materials should be examined carefully in order to make the most accurate assessment. Personal statements and letters of recommendation can often provide more in-depthinformation on an applicant’s strengths and personality. As an Indicator of Broad Areas of Strength and Weakness As mentioned above, you can'tuse SAT scores to determine if someone is knowledgeable in a very specific subject area, such as Victorian literature or human biology. However, it is sometimes possible to make inferences as towhat broad subject areas the test-taker is stronger and weaker in. Beginning in March 2016, a student's total SAT score will be the sum of the scores of two sections: Math and Evidence-Based Reading Writing. There is also an optional essay. If a person scored much higher in one section than another, it may be possible to determine which areas they are most skilled and comfortable in.For example, someone with a perfect score of 800 for the Math section, but a 600 in Evidence-Based Reading and Writing may be stronger in math and science. This is certainly not always true, but it can help support an inference if there is otherrelatedevidence, such as a transcript showing lots of math and science classes and a personal statement describing a passion for chemistry. This can be important information for employers looking to hire people with a certain skill set. For example, an engineering company would likely want their employees to have strong math skills but not care as much about writing skills.Colleges can use this information in a similar way. If a student is applying for a school’s journalism program, admissions officers may be more interested in their reading and writing scores than their math score. SAT scores can indicate a person's strengths. To Help Make Efficient Admissions Decisions Sometimes, particularly if a college, employer, or scholarship committee receives a high number of applicants, they need a way to quickly make acceptance or rejection decisions.SAT scores provide a clear and efficient way to judge an applicant’s academic ability, and as the number of colleges students apply to increases, schools have begun to rely more on standardized testsas an admission factor. Almost every school publishes the range of SAT scores forthe students in its most recent entering class. Half of the class scored within this 25th-75th percentile range.Comparing a student’s SAT scores to the school’s score range can help admissions officers easily identify students far below or above that range and make those admissions decisions easier. For example, if a school’s 25th-75th percentile range is 1300 to 1450, a student who scored a 1160 on the SAT will likely not be offered admission, while a student with a 1550 appears to have an excellent chance of being accepted. However, how a student does in relation to a school’s SAT score range should not be the only criteria for admission. A student with a lower-than-average SAT score may have excellent letters of recommendation and extracurriculars, while a student with a great SAT score may not have much else to recommend her.SAT scores can help make an initial decision easier, but the final admission decision should take other factors into account. Can SAT Scores Predict Future Success? The main reason that most people use SAT scores is because they are attempting to select people they feel will be successful at their school or company and beyond. The line of thinking is that people who score well on the SAT are intelligent or know how to prepare for something well, and they will continue to use those skills in the future. Is this true? The short answer is, â€Å"sometimes.† A high school student who scores well on the SAT will usually have at least a certain degree of intelligence and motivation, but that does not always mean they will do well in college. The student could have spent a lot of time studying for the SAT but then felt like he could coast once he got to college, he could find the heavy workload challenging, he may struggle to adapt to new surroundings, he may not work well in groups, or one of many more potential scenarios. Researchers who have studied this relationship have found that SAT scores only account for 10-20 percent of the variation in their college GPAs freshman year;however, this study did not take into account that schools admit students with a relatively narrow range of SAT scores, which may make the relationship appear weaker than it is.Anotherstudy found that high school GPA is a better indicator of whether a student will succeed in college than SAT score.Thismakes sense because a GPA takes into account the grades from your entire four years in high school, as opposed to the scores of a single test. The relationship between SAT scores and career success is even weaker. There is a correlation between people with higher SAT scores and people who end up working in more competitive fields and have more advanced degrees, but SAT score alone doesn’t always predict success. There are numerous factors required to be successful in most careers that the SAT can’t test for, such as interpersonal skills and work ethic, not to mention the specific skills needed to do certain jobs well. Bottom Line SAT scores should never be used as the sole indicator of someone’s intelligence or probability of success; they don’t measure a wide enough variety of skills or types of intelligence, and they can be influenced by too many outside factors. However, studies have shown a strong correlation between SAT score and IQ, and a person who does well on the SAT is usuallyeither intelligent, hard-working, or a combination of the two, which can make them more successful students and employees. In the end, SAT scores should be used as one part of an application that, along with other materials such as GPA, letters of recommendation, personal statements, and extracurriculars can help determine personal strengths and identify which people have a higher probability of success. International Financial Management Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

International Financial Management - Assignment Example Pertaining to planned investments in South Africa by Neptune, this report outlines the possible threats of local firms’ resistance and how Neptune might respond to them. Finally, the report outlines the effects of currency variation of citing production abroad, if Neptune let sales in South Africa to be in Rand. Effects of the Possibility that the United States will take Action to reduce its Current Account Deficit on Neptune The current account deficit refers to a situation where the total imports into a country exceed the total exports (RupyaGyan, 2013). Reduction of the current account deficit means a reduction in the quantity and value of imports and an increase in the quantity and value of exports. The major aim of this move is to encourage and promote exports while protecting local firms of a country. However, it should be noted that a switch in expenditure from foreign to home goods reduces foreign income (Jones, 2003, p, 641). For instance, For instance, industrial cou ntries sought to reduce their current account deficits by reducing oil imports or increasing their exports to other countries. As exports increase, current account deficit reduces (Siddaiah, 2010, p, 71). The possibility that the United States will take action to reduce its current account deficit will pose various effects on Neptune Plc. ... Effects on Neptune Plc if it continues to Export Water Pumps to the United States If the United States’ government takes action to reduce its current account deficit, then the government’s main objective will be to reduce imports to its country and increase its exports. Most governments use the policy of reduction of the current account deficit to divert the expenditure of consumers away from imports and direct it towards home produced goods. Countries limit imports to reduce current account deficit (Neave, 2009, p, 301).This means that, as United States’ residents turn their attention to home produced water pumps, they will spend more in purchasing American manufactured water pumps and spends less in buying foreign manufactured water pumps that have been exported to the United States. Consequently, the demand for foreign manufactured water pumps, Neptune Plc’s water pumps being among the category is likely to reduce drastically. This is because Neptune Pl c manufactures water pumps in Europe and exports to the United States of America. Consequently, this will lead to a decrease in profits because sales shall have decreased because of that scenario. The possible ways that the United States’ Government can use to reduce the current account deficit include demand-switching policies, foreign goods demand reducing policies and supply side policies (Gillespie, 201, p, 493). The use of tariff levies means that the United States’ Government will impose tax on imports. Definitely, imports’ prices will go up. This is because foreign companies that export goods to the United States, Neptune Plc being one of them, will raise prices of their water pumps to maintain their profit levels. As the prices of

Peter Singer’s Solution to World Poverty Essay

How can we help people in need, and become better human beings? How can it be that we have money for new cars, houses and vacations, but when UNICEF or some other kind of healthcare organization ask us for just 2 dollars, we turn them down right away? In the article â€Å"Solution to world poverty† Peter Singer gives some of his suggestions on how to help others, and become better persons. Singer tells a story about a man named Bob. Bob just bought himself a new car. The car he bought is one of the most expensive cars you can get. A classic Volkswagen Bugatti. He then has to make a choice. He either has to let his car get destroyed and save the life of a child or save the car and let the child get killed. He chose to save the car. The other story comes from a Brazilian film, a woman called Dora, all she has to leave a homeless nine years old boy to a family that will adopt him in order to make a thousand dollars. Dora delivers the boy into his new family, but she is told that the boy was too old for adoption and he would be killed for organs used in transplantation. To save the boy, Dora decides to take the boy back. In fact Dora would like to save the boy because she has the direct contact with him, but for Bob, he never ever see this kid before, they have no relationship or any contact at all. But what is luxury? Money can be divided into two categories. â€Å"Need to have† and â€Å"Nice to have†. Food is something you need to have, clothes is something you need to have, but a vacation is just nice to have. â€Å"Nice to have â€Å" is just a luxury. I have just used 300 dollars on a new Xbox, but instead of using 300 dollars on this machine, I could have donated the money to the research of cancer. I would not mind giving the 300 dollars to some kind of healthcare organization, but now when I have the Xbox at my home, I say to myself that â€Å"it’s too late†, but in reality it’s not. All I have to do is return the Xbox, and give the money to the organization, but I know I won’t. Singer uses the stories to let himself into the conscience of his readers. Singer says: â€Å"If you think that is was very wrong of Bob not to throw the switch that would have diverted the train and saved the child’s life, then it is hard to see how you could deny that it is also very wrong not to send money to one of the organizations listed above.† Singer â€Å"blames me† for delaying the cure of cancer, when I bought that Xbox, instead of donating the money. I’m sure that the most of people, who have read this article, would think about the subject â€Å"donating† without doing anything more than think about it. Singers article is provoking, and you feel bad after you have read it, and maybe that’s the thing we need. What about people, how would it affect them? Most people might become more humane. The concept of donating would be difficult for the first couple of years, but slowly the public would start to get use to donating. After a few generations, it would be a part of the everyday life, around the world. Singer writes: â€Å"But he was not unlucky at all. We are all in that situation.† Singer is referring to the choice Bob had to make. Singer means that we all have to choose between life or death. Luxury or healthcare. If Peter Singer’s plan were to actually work, the amount of lives saved would be enormous. By donating the money that would otherwise would go to luxuries, organizations such as UNICEF would send the money overseas to the people who need it. With that money, they could buy food, water, and get roofs above their heads and many other products that are considered to be necessary . There is one problem, however: how much of the money donated would actually reach the people it was intended for? Some organizations take a percentage of the donated money to cover administrative costs. I have talked to a member of Green Peace, and he could not tell me how much of the money that was donated, actually goes to the area that needs it. If only one third of the donated money goes to the troubled area, it’s no wonder why the results is in so slow progress.

The Issue Of The Sex Industry - 1219 Words

The sex industry is controversial issue that has been debated on whether or not to allow the industry to become legal. So what would be the solution to best handle such a problematic profession? On the one hand, many have acknowledged the problems it holds while operating illegally, and believed it would be far more beneficial for prostitutes to allow the sex industry to operate as a legitimate business. On the other hand, however, many who are in opposition to the proposal refuse it from becoming a legitimate business. Those who support this viewpoint believe that it destroys and means women by practicing a profession that many consider to be slavery; yet they lack a solution to end or stunt the growth of current issues that have†¦show more content†¦It is often said that risks are always involved in the decisions any individual decides to make, but for some, especially women put themselves in far greater risk of running into problems by working as a sex worker. As Cheryl Edwardes states, â€Å"Condoms are not used 100 per cent of the time in the sex industry because there is a much lower percentage of use by street workers. Street workers have a greater dependence on drugs.... Unsafe practices continue. ...[U]p to 50 per cent of brothel workers are undertaking oral sex without using prophylactics.. Basically, she is saying that this is a profession that puts its labor force in harm s way by potentially exposing them to diseases every time they provide their services to a client. Apparently, Edwardes does not say so directly, she apparently assumes that if the client wishes to perform sexual activity without a condom, they must do as requested regardless if the industry is legal in the area or not. Thus, providing a decent reason to be in opposition of legalizing prostitution. In the same way, others have acknowledged that this is a common threat sex workers face every time they practice their profession. A number of
